Dr Emma Cunningham
University of East London
Topic: Women whistle-blowers in Policing
Dr Emma Cunningham is a criminologist whose work centres on inequality, justice, and feminist perspectives on policing. With a background in Politics, Master’s in Criminology, and Politics PhD she has taught widely across criminology, policing, victimology and domestic and sexual violence, and is a HEA Fellow with leadership training through Advance HE’s Aurora Programme. Her research is grounded in feminist principles inspired by Mary Wollstonecraft and explores gender, misconduct, and inequality within policing. Her monograph Women in Policing: Feminist Perspectives on Theory and Practice which she wrote in 2021. She has contributed to policing education locally, nationally and internationally, including work with the Rwandan National Police, and has collaborated extensively with criminal justice partners. Emma’s applied research includes work on domestic violence early-intervention through Operation Encompass, national stop-and-search analysis for the City of London Police, and ongoing arts-based projects addressing domestic abuse. She writes for both academic and public audiences—including The Conversation, Policing Insight, and national media—and is regularly invited to discuss criminological issues on TV and radio. Her current projects include chapters and books on women in policing, social justice, and inequality, as well as research on Black and Asian policewomen.
Achievements
- Commissioned by City of London Police (2024–2025) to analyse stop and search data and provide policy recommendations.
- Author of Women in Policing: Feminist Perspectives on Theory and Practice (Routledge, 2022). • Contributor to the forthcoming Routledge volume Women in Policing Worldwide and in Emerging Regions (2025).
- Appointed to the Editorial Board of Advances in Social Behaviour Research (2024).
- Director of Studies for several PhD students, including international police officers; external examiner for a doctoral thesis on women in policing.
- Aurora Leadership Programme (Advance HE, 2024) • Regular contributor to BBC, Sky News, and The Conversation on policing, misogyny, and criminal justice issues.
Contribution to Current Job Profile
I am a Co-Director of the Noon Research Centre at UEL. I have recently also applied to become the EDI Lead across my Royal Docks School of Business and Law as I am deeply committed to advancing equality, diversity, and inclusion, and I welcome the opportunity to contribute to the strategic leadership of the school.
Roles and Responsibilities
Current responsibilities at the University of East London include convening modules for third year undergraduates which includes writing the lectures, seminars marking and administration. I am Programme Leader for BA Criminology and Criminal Justice so I attend boards liaise with external examiners and undertake Programme reviews. I undertake my administrative duties and do my research too.
